New Jersey Teen Volunteer Guide:
Make a Difference, Build Skills, and Shine for College
Hey New Jersey teens (and future changemakers everywhere)—want to do something that actually matters? Want to grow your skills, meet amazing people, and boost your college app, all while having fun? Volunteering in your community is a one-way ticket to all that and more.
While this article highlights organizations in Central New Jersey — specifically Union, Essex, and Morris Counties—that welcome teen volunteers — these opportunities can serve as example types for teens everywhere to seek similar options in their own communities.
Here are four BIG reasons to get involved:
1. Make a Real Impact (Seriously)
Forget the “just for credit” mindset. When you volunteer, you make a real difference in your community. You get to:
- Help kids learn, grow, and play
- Restore forests, trails, and ecosystems
- Support veterans who served the country
- Empower people with special needs
Your time matters—and the organizations below prove it.
2. Build Real-World Skills (No Desk Required)
Think hands-on. Think resume-worthy. Think about learning by doing:
- Communication & teamwork
- Leadership & responsibility
- Event planning & logistics
- Science, nature, and tech know-how
3. Get Those Volunteer Hours (and Then Some)
Need 10, 20, or 50 hours for school? These spots have got you covered. Plus, they’re way more interesting than you think.
4. Stand Out on College Apps (Big Time)
Colleges love to see commitment, initiative, and community involvement. When you volunteer:
- You show you care about something bigger than yourself
- You gain stories and leadership experience to write about
- You stand out in a sea of applicants
